Sodanet GST-1000

HOW IT WORKS: As kidney disease progresses, the kidney will not be able to excrete acid (H+ ion) and cannot produce and reabsorb bicarbonate, total acid load in the blood increases which if not corrected has abnormal consequences like bone resorption and poor quality of life. 

Sodanet GST-1000 provides bicarbonate ion which helps in neutralizing and correcting the acidic state in kidney failure and prevents kidney disease from further progression. Decreasing the acid state it prevents muscle and bone from degrading in these patients. 

DOSAGE: One tablet of Sodanet GST-1000 contains 11.9 meq of sodium and bicarbonate each.

USES: When serum bicarbonate concentration <22 mEq/ and to maintain the value within the normal range, which is 22–29 mEq/L. It also helps in reducing potassium in our body, which is often increased in renal disease patients, and to alkalinize the urine which prevents stone formation.

 INTERACTIONS:

Sodium bicarbonate tablets  may have interaction with antibiotic (doxycycline), pain killer (aspirin), NMDA receptor antagonist (memantine), anti-diabetic (chlorpropamide), anti-psychotic (lithium), diuretic (furosemide, bumetanide, ethacrynic acid), sympathomimetic drug (pseudoephedrine, ephedrine).

Absorption: Well absorbed orally

SAFETY: 

LACTATION, PREGNANCY: Due to absence of adequate information, nodosis is best avoided during lactation and pregnancy.

LIVER DISEASE: Sodium bicarbonate should also be used with caution in liver disease patients and it may require dose adjustment.

SIDE EFFECTS: 

It causes excess salt and water retention in our body, hence it may aggravate swelling in patients of kidney disease (theoretical possibility), may increase sodium levels in the blood (Hypernatremia), cause increase bicarbonate levels in the blood exceeding the normal value (>22 mEq/litre) Metabolic alkalosis, Belching, and Gastric distension
